Rough winter weather causing travel woes in Texas

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Freezing rain and ice pellets have continued to pummel a vast swath of West Texas, and American Airlines has canceled nearly 300 flights out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport due to the winter storm.

National Weather Service meteorologists said Thursday that roads and highways were still dangerous from the Panhandle south to San Angelo. American Airlines canceled 179 regional and 105 mainline flights because of patchy fog and ice.

More freezing drizzle was expected Thursday night in Lubbock, where a winter storm warning was extended from Thursday afternoon to noon on Friday.

Temperatures across the region were at least 20 degrees below normal.

The Texas Department of Transportation says Interstate 20 remains open, but that black ice and sleet cover most lanes in some areas.
