Romney: Economy Is Top Issue For Voters

(CBS)
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:

ORLANDO, FLA. -- Gone are the days when Mitt Romney spent the majority of his stump speeches delving deeply into red-meat social issues and international policy. The former Massachusetts governor still outlines his entire platform at each event, but his focus is now squarely on the economy.

"Right now, the number one problem that people are talking about as I go across the country is our economy," Romney said to an enthusiastic crowd of over 200 people in Orlando. "You know, a few months ago we were all talking about what was happening in the Middle East—and that's an enormous challenge—my heart goes out to all those who are sacrificing right now with their loved ones away serving in that theater of danger. But I'm also hearing a great deal and even more today about our economy."

Romney's economic stimulus package, the details of which he unveiled to reporters on Saturday, would reduce taxes on individuals and corporations and carries a price tag of nearly $250 billion. Romney, a former private equity investor, said that Congress should act within 30 days.

"There's a concept that's spoken of now and then called 'the tipping point,' where if things start to go downward, they start going downward fast and they start sort of spiraling down," Romney said. "If you can keep them from tipping downward, it has a major positive impact. So it's very important now that we keep our economy from going downhill."
