Roman Polanski Decision: U.S. "Deeply Disappointed"
The Justice Department says it is "deeply disappointed" by Switzerland's decision to free movie director Roman Polanski, who fled the United States three decades ago before being sentenced for having sex with a 13-year old girl.
In a briefing with reporters, Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer rejected criticism from the Swiss government that the Justice Department's long-standing extradition request fell short by failing to include testimony about Polanski's sentencing in Los Angeles.
Breuer says the request "was completely supported by the (Extradition) treaty, completely supported by the facts of the law," adding that the "underlying conduct was, of course, very serious."
Breuer said Justice Department lawyers are reviewing legal options but would not say if the United States has any realistic options left.
