Roberts Edges Pate At Byron
Loren Roberts snapped his two-year winless slump Sunday in dramatic fashion.
Roberts parred the first playoff hole to defeat Steve Pate in the $3 million Byron Nelson Classic. It was Roberts' first PGA Tour victory since the 1997 CVS Charity Classic.
But it wasn't easy.
Seventy-two holes wasn't enough for Roberts and Pate. Both finished the final round at 18-under-par 262 and advanced to sudden-death playoff.
Pate missed a long par putt on the first playoff hole and had to tap in for bogey. Roberts then made his short par putt for the victory.
Roberts entered the day with a two-stroke lead. He shot a 2-under 68.
Pate, though, was able to forge a playoff by shooting a 4-under 66.
Chris DiMarco, Brian Watts, Lee Janzen and Sergio Garcia finished at 11 under.
Tiger Woods and Emlyn Aubrey were next at 9 under.
Woods looked like the player to beat after the first two rounds, but he folded Saturday with a 74. He came back on Sunday and shot a 1 under 69.
Woods is scheduled to play in Europe next week at the Deutsche Bank Open.
The Byron Nelson in Texas featured warm, windy conditions. The TPC at Las Colinas is a par-70, 6,899-yard layout. First prize is $540,000.
