Republicans Told to Avoid "You Lie" Outburst
House Minority Leader John Boehner told a group of reporters Wednesday morning that when "you invite someone to your home you should be respectful and considerate," CNN reports.
Boehner, minority whip Eric Cantor and Mike Pence "warned rank and file Republican members in a private meeting this morning to show the president 'respect' during tonight's speech," according to The Plum Line, which ties the report to sources familiar with the meeting.
"All of them talked about how the president is a guest," a House Republican aide told Greg Sargent.
Following the closed caucus meeting Wednesday morning, leaders of the House Republican Caucus held a media availability. Wilson's outburst did not come up, and any discussion of paying polite attention was tied to President Obama, not members of the GOP.
"I think the president has to prove to the American people that he's listening to what they're saying," Boehner said.
According to the Associated Press, Wilson himself says he has "been getting plenty of ribbing from his family and colleagues leading up to Obama's big speech." He said not to expect a repeat performance.
"I am a gentleman. My natural inclination is to be on my best behavior," he told the AP. "I have the highest respect for the president, and I certainly look forward to the speech."
