Republicans Reject Partial War-funding Proposal
Republican leaders derided legislation Tuesday that House Democrats are reportedly drafting to require two votes in the House to fully fund the military in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“This is an irresponsible approach,” Republican Conference Chairman Adam Putnam of Florida said about the plan that mirrors a similar plan by GOP Rep. John McHugh of New York.
Appropriations Chairman David Obey (D-Wis.) is drafting legislation to fund the war in two stages, requiring a second House vote in July to free up more than half of the military funds in a wartime emergency spending bill that could see the floor as early as this week.
"Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid should not treat our men and women in uniform like they are children who are getting a monthly allowance," House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said in a statement Tuesday. "Republicans will not support rationing funds for our troops in harm's way and neither will the American people."
