Report: Spotify to begin beta of browser-based app
Digital music streaming service Spotify may be starting the initial beta run of a browser-based app, according to new reports.
The popular music service was unique among its peers in requiring customers to download a desktop client, similar to iTunes, that must be launched to listen to music. But it appears that may change starting today.
Rumors of a browser-based version of Spotify have been floating around since early September, and calls for a web player have regularly been one of the most requested features by customers. According to a report on The Verge, a select few beta testers will get their chance soon.
The Verge said the web-based player will function nearly identically to the desktop version. Core features like search, Spotify Radio and playlists will all be available. Like the downloadable version, there will be audio and banner ads.
Expect to see the browser-based app roll out over the coming months.
