Report: Man charged in NYC machete street brawl seen on video
NEW YORK -- A man seen on video wielding a machete and sparring with another man who was holding a garbage can in a New York City street brawl has been charged, a report says.
Luis Roman, 35, a New York City transit employee, appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court Thursday to face charges of attempted assault and criminal mischief, according to local news site DNA Info.
The brawl broke out just before 7 a.m. Wednesday when an unidentified pedestrian crossed a Manhattan street while talking on his cellphone, the report says. Roman, who was driving, allegedly became enraged because he thought the man wasn't paying attention, inciting the brawl in which Roman is seen swinging a machete.
He tried to flee, but was later arrested, police say.
Roman reportedly said he was acting in self defense. The other man is seen in the video throwing a large metal garbage can at Roman and grabbing his car door.
A judge ordered Roman held on $2,500 cash bond, DNA Info reports.
