Report: John Farrell, Fla. high school teacher, charged after allegedly having sexual relationship with student

(CBS) FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A 25-year-old high school teacher has been arrested on 20 counts of unlawful sexual activity with an underage student, reports CBS Miami.

John Farrell allegedly started the consensual relationship with the 16-year-old girl during after school activities. Authorities said the two would leave school and head to Farrell's home where they would have sex.

Cardinal Gibbons High School reportedly confirmed that Farrell, a math and statistics teacher, had passed a rigorous background check required for new teachers. He had reportedly been working at the school for a year.

The station reports Farrell is out of jail after posting a $50,000 bail. School officials said the teacher is on unpaid administrative leave.
