Rep. Kagen Calls For Jefferson's Resignation

Freshman Rep. Steve Kagen (D-Wis.) issued a statement today calling on indicted Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.) to resign.  He said that Jefferson "should consider resigning for the good of Congress and for the good of the nation."  This is the first statement from a Democrat (that we've seen) calling for Jefferson's resignation.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee put out a statement touting Nancy Pelosi's swift and decisive action in removing Jefferson from the House Ways an Means Committee, but fell short of calling for his resignation.  It concluded by saying: "This is a tragedy for Mr. Jefferson's family, his constituents and for the United States Congress.  For the good of the people of Louisiana's 2nd District, who have been through so much, we hope this matter is quickly resolved."
