Red Wings Sign Shanahan

All-Star left wing Brendan Shanahan has signed a four-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings.

"Brendan has been a very large part of this club's success since we acquired him in the 1996-97 season," general manager Ken Holland said Wednesday.

The team did not disclose terms of the contract. Shanahan's agent, Rick Curran, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Shanahan, 31, has 77 points and leads the team with 40 goals going into Friday's game against Washington. He is being paid $4 million this season.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound native of Mimico, Ontario, is currently the 10th-leading scorer in the NHL. His career points total 878 in 945 games.

Shanahan, who became a Red Wing in October 1996, would have become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
