Rats Savvy Gamblers, Study Suggests

Rats know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em, according to new research on gambling that suggests the rodents know how to play the odds, the BBC reported.

The rats developed a "strategy" when faced with tasks that could result in earning treats. The research suggests rats avoid behavior attached to high rewards out of fear of risking severe punishment - in this case, having their food supply cut off.

The study's authors write in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology that the findings are a "significant step forward" and may lead to new treatments for gambling addiction in humans.
