Ramstad Expected To Retire
Rep. Jim Ramstad (R-Minn.) is expected to announce his retirement at a press conference at 3:00 this afternoon in Minnetonka, Minnesota.
Ramstad spokesman John Magnuson said that the 9-term congressman would be “making a major announcement” about his future plans.
If Ramstad stepped down, Democrats would view the seat as a prime pickup opportunity. The exurban Minneapolis district only narrowly voted for President Bush in the last two elections. Ramstad has faced little opposition for re-election, always winning with at least 64 percent of the vote. But without him on the ballot, the district's demographics would ensure the race would be competitive.
Ramstad had been mentioned as a possible party-switcher in light of the Democrats’ Congressional sweep last fall. He has been one of the party’s most moderate members, supporting abortion rights and opposing the trade embargo with Cuba.
