Outcry after racist song played before high school football game

RICHMOND, Va. - The principal of a suburban Richmond high school has apologized to his counterpart at a predominantly black city school for a song with racist lyrics that was played before a Friday night football game.

Henrico County school officials told the Richmond Times-Dispatch they have identified the student they suspect is responsible and the student will be disciplined.

The song was played over the public address system during warmups by players from the county's Glen Allen High School and Richmond's John Marshall High School. The parody song is based on the 1980s Disney animated TV show "DuckTales." The pre-game version included offense depictions of African-Americans and racial slurs.

Glen Allen school administrators said songs are typically reviewed before they are played, but this wasn't.

The game was played without incident.

CBS affiliate WTVR in Richmond reports that in a October 17 letter to John Marshall High School Principal William Royal, Glen Allen Principal Gwen Miller said the incident is not reflective of her school's culture.

"We are a diverse and inclusive community and are appalled that the instigator of this event has sent a message contrary to our beliefs and practices," Miller said.

The song, which featured the N-word, shocked and angered many in the crowd, WTVR reported.

"As a parent of a biracial child that goes [to Glen Allen High School] I am disgusted," one Glen Allen High School parent posted on the WTVR Facebook page.
