Queen Elizabeth II bows out of Monday appearance

Queen Elizabeth II has bowed out of an appearance on Monday as she continues to recover from illness.

Buckingham Palace released the following statement: "The Queen will regrettably no longer attend the Commonwealth Observance at Westminster Abbey today as she continues to recover following her recent illness. The Duke of Edinburgh will attend the Observance as planned. However, Her Majesty will still attend the Commonwealth Reception at Marlborough House this evening to sign a new Commonwealth Charter."

According to the statement, the 86-year-old monarch "hopes to undertake some of her official engagements planned for the rest of this week."

The queen was recently hospitalized overnight for treatment of gastroenteritis, marking her first hospitalization in 10 years. Last week, officials said the queen's health remains good and that she was not planning to reduce her appearances and activities.

Also on the queen's schedule this week is a visit to Tech City in London's East End on Wednesday and a service at the Guards' Chapel in central London on Thursday.
