Prosecutors: Teen posted plot to kill classmate on Facebook
(CBS) CHICAGO - A Chicago-area high school student is accused of threatening a classmate via Facebook after allegedly posting that he'd been planning to kill him for a year and would shoot him at school, a Cook County prosecutor said in court on Sunday.
Alan B. Shepard High School in Palos Heights was alerted by several students who saw the threat online, court records show, according to the Chicago Sun-Times Media Wire.
Thomas Braasch, 19, of Alsip, Ill. was charged with disorderly conduct for threatening his fellow student. He appeared in bond court Sunday, and Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered Braasch held in lieu of $150,000 bail..
According to the Media Wire, Assistant State's Attorney Anthony Gattuso said Braasch was stopped immediately when he arrived at school Thursday, the day after the threat was allegedly made. He was taken to an office and searched.
Braasch did not have a weapon when he was searched, Gattuso said, but officials did find a phone Braasch had allegedly stolen from a Costco wholesale store, the Sun Times reported.
Gattuso said the teen told the school's staff he planned to kill his classmate, and he allegedly told police he was going to bring a gun to school to "pop" the other student.
He also said he knew he'd get in trouble for posting the threat online, Gattuso said.
Braasch has also been charged with retail theft after he was allegedly caught on surveillance camera Oct. 12 taking a Samsung Galaxy 4 phone from a Costco in in Bedford Park.
