Police officer, and deer hunter, fired and convicted

CBS/AP

(CBS/AP) TUSCUMBIA, Ala. - First he was fired, now he's convicted. A former Alabama police officer has been found guilty of hunting without permission on federal property when he killed a deer in December.

Muscle Shoals police officer Greg Scoggins appeared in Colbert County District Court Tuesday.  He was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and court costs.

Scoggins was accused of killing a deer while he was on duty Dec. 23. He was fired from the police department after being arrested late last year.

The Florence TimesDaily reports charges of reckless endangerment and hunting with the aid of a motor vehicle were dismissed.

Scoggins' attorney says he plans to appeal the conviction.
