Police: Missing Univ. of Calif. statue found -- in pieces

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Police say that a stolen statue honoring a former University of California, Berkeley crew coach has been found, reports CBS San Francisco.

A suspect, Dean Gamaza, has been arrested in the case, according to the station. The 300-pound life size bronze statue was reported stolen from the University of California Berkeley Boathouse in Oakland last Tuesday.

The statue had been erected in memory of Carroll Ebright, who coached the university's crew teams to three Olympic gold medals in the early 20th century. The statue's previously reported worth was an estimated value of $80,000.

Late Saturday night, San Leandro police reportedly spotted a suspicious truck parked at a storage facility with part of the statue visible in the bed. Then, officers went to the nearby home of 46-year-old Gamaza, where they discovered the head and feet of the statue in a hole in the ground, according to CBS San Francisco.

Officers also say they found power tools -- including a reciprocating saw -- they believe were used to cut the bronze statue into pieces.

Gamaza is currently being held without bail at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, according to the station. He is reportedly scheduled to be in court Thursday at the Alameda County Superior Court.
