Police hunt for suspect after man found shot to death, burned

GRANITE FALLS, Wash. -- Police are searching for a man suspected of shooting and killing another man, before burning his remains.

Detectives in Granite Falls are trying to track down 49-year-old George Hatt Jr. in the death of Andrew Spencer. They believe the Granite Falls man may have fled to California.

Witnesses allegedly told police that the men recently had an altercation because Hatt suspected Spencer of burglarizing his house.

Spencer was last seen alive Nov. 3, and police believe they found his body - shot, burned and buried - on Wednesday, though the remains have been sent to the medical examiner for identification.

Detectives believe Hatt fled with his girlfriend about a week ago to California, where he was already wanted for parole violation.

Police say Hatt is considered armed and dangerous, reports CBS affiliate KIRO.

Stephanie Burnside, Spencer's girlfriend, told KIRO that the last time she heard from him was Nov. 3, after they had an argument.

"'I love you so much baby.' That's the last text I got from him and the last time I'd seen him," she said.

Burnside said the scene where she discovered Spencer's car off Mountain Loop Highway was downright suspicious.

"All the windows were bashed out of the car, the tires were off the car, his sock was on the ground when I went up there, and I know it was his sock because I do his laundry," she said.

The remains were found nearby, after a search by police, Burnside and Spencer's family.
