Police: Fla. dad shoots son on Father's Day
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - Police say a central Florida teenager is in critical condition after his father shot him multiple times on Father's Day.
CBS affiliate WKMG reports the shooting took place after 18-year-old Eugene Blackwell Jr. intervened in an argument between his parents.
Police say the elder Blackwell had been fighting with his wife at their home and choked her when she brought up the possibility of divorce, reports the station. The woman left the house as the 18-year-old intervened, and a short time later, the elder Blackwell allegedly shot his son four times.
Neighbors called 911 on Sunday evening after hearing gunshots coming from the New Smyrna Beach home and seeing the teen running to a neighbor's house for help.
The teen was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center, where he is being treated.
The 45-year-old Blackwell reportedly fled the scene following the shooting, but authorities say he later surrendered. He is being held without bail at the Volusia County Jail on attempted murder charges.
