Police: Florida boy in coma after being struck by celebratory New Year's gunfire

(CBS/AP) RUSKIN, Fla. - Authorities say a 12-year-old Florida boy was critically injured early New Year's Day after being struck by celebratory gunfire falling from the sky.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says the boy's family was sitting outside their Ruskin home, near Tampa, around 1 a.m. Sunday and watching fireworks.

According to Sheriff's office spokesman Larry McKinnon, the boy's mother saw him fall to the ground, bleeding from his nose and eyes. She drove him to a hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered a gunshot wound from a bullet that entered the top of his head.

McKinnon says the boy is still in critical condition at a Tampa hospital and the bullet is still in his head.

Detectives say no one nearby had been firing a gun and the boy was apparently struck by gunfire that could have been fired miles away.

The Tampa Bay Times reported that the boy is 12-year-old Diego Duran. His mother was at his side all day Sunday as he lay in a coma, the Times said. The bullet is still lodged under his eye.
