GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) Authorities in New Jersey say they arrested a man for allegedly killing a police dog that was trying to apprehend him.

Gloucester Township police say Skyler Robinson threw the German shepherd named Schultz into highway traffic Tuesday night.

Authorities say the 3 1/2-year-old dog had tracked Robinson and another suspect about a half-mile from a restaurant they're accused of robbing.

Police say the German shepherd had grabbed Robinson's arm when he swung the animal into a busy highway.  Robinson was also injured by the car that struck Schultz.

A person convicted of killing a police animal in New Jersey can be sentenced to five years in prison.
