Pitt Guard Arrested, Off Squad

Fred Primus, a freshman guard with the Pittsburgh basketball team, was dropped from the roster Tuesday after being arrested on grand theft charges, the team said Tuesday.

"I have been informed that a member of our men's basketball team, Fred Primus, has been arrested in Philadelphia and charged with grand theft," Pitt athletic director Steven Pederson said in a statement distributed just before the tipoff of Tuesday's game at Villanova.

"He was immediately dismissed from the basketball team," Pederson said.

Malvern police refused to confirm the arrest but said more information would be available Wednesday.

Primus, a 6-foot-3 guard from Washington, D.C., played in 14 of 16 games this season and averaged 4.4 points per game.
