Pickpockets target Pa. woman with greeting card scheme

CBS

(CBS/AP) NORTH VERSAILLES, Pa. - Excuse me, m'am, but would you mind reading that greeting card to me?

If that sounds like a ridiculous ruse, it apparently worked for some Pittsburgh-area thieves who picked the pocketbook of an elderly woman who fell for it, police say.

Police say the thieves asked the woman to help them pick out and read greeting cards in a supermarket. North Versailles, Pa. police chief Michael DeLuca says the woman was so focused on helping the men, she didn't notice one of them taking the wallet out of her purse, which she had in her shopping cart.

DeLuca tells WPXI-TV that police haven't arrested anyone in the incident. Police say the thieves went on to spend $3,000 at Target and Best Buy stores in nearby Monroeville, using the 71-year-old woman's stolen credit cards.
