Phillies Blank Padres

The Philadelphia Phillies finally got a strong outing from a starter other than Curt Schilling.

Carlton Loewer pitched a five-hitter for his first career shutout and Marlon Anderson drove in two runs to give the Phillies a 3-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.

"The scoreboard speaks for itself," Phillies manager Terry Francona said of Loewer's performance. "He can be the type of pitcher who can go nine innings."

"I just wanted to stay within myself and do what it took to win," Loewer said. "It was good to win this type of game."

The Padres were unable to advance a runner past second base in the game. Gwynn reached second twice, once in the first and again when he doubled in the sixth.

"He did a great job keeping us off balance and had real good stuff," Gwynn said. "I was really impressed."

Woody Williams (1-1) allowed just one hit and an unearned run in the first seven innings. Williams then appeared to tire in the eighth.

Mike Lieberthal hit a leadoff single and moved to second on a groundout. One out later, Doug Glanville hit an RBI single and advanced to second on the throw home. He then scored on Anderson's second RBI single.

Williams allowed four hits, three runs two earned in 7 2-3 innings with six strikeouts.

"Both sides had great pitching, a well-pitched game," Padres manager Bruce Bochy. "I don't think they could pitch any better."

Williams did not allow a hit through 5 2-3 innings. Desi Relaford led off the sixth by reaching base on a throwing error by second baseman Quilvio Veras and was sacrificed to second by Loewer. After Glanville fle out to right, Anderson lined a single to left scoring Relaford.

"My job is to go out and put zeros on the board," said Williams, unimpressed with the no-hit bid. "I got an error behind me and I didn't pick my teammates up. I made some bad pitches."
