Phila. cop shoots man mistaken for burglar

(CBS) - A West Philadelphia man was seriously wounded Wednesday when he was shot by a police officer who mistook him for a burglar, authorities said.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that at about 4:45 p.m., an officer responded to a call about a robbery in progress. Lt. Ray Evers said the uniformed officer arrived in his marked vehicle to find the door of the house open.

The policeman confronted the man inside the house, and ended up firing one shot that struck the man in the arm.

Evers said that no weapon was found on the man who was shot.

The bullet went through the man's arm and into his chest, Evers said. He was brought to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday, where he was reported in critical condition.

Police are not positive there actually was a burglary at the home where the incident occurred. They say they were trying to track the original 911 call reporting the robbery.

Evers said the District Attorney's Office and the Police Department's Internal Affairs Division are investigating, and the officer who fired the shot will be put on administrative duty.
