Penn State officials plead not guilty to perjury, failure to report sexual abuse charges

(CBS) STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Two former Penn State officials have pleaded not guilty to charges relating to the child sex abuse scandal involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

CNN reports that Tom Curley and Gary Schultz both entered not guilty pleas Friday to charges of perjury and failure to report child sex abuse.

Last month a judge decided that the case against the two former officials will go to trial. At the hearing, Mike McQueary, who was a graduate assistant at the time, testified that he told Curley and Schultz about "severe sexual acts" he witnessed Sandusky committing against a boy in the Penn State locker room in 2002, according to CNN.

But when Curley, 57, testified before a grand jury on the matter, he said had not been made aware of any sexual conduct by the former coach. The former athletic director, whose wife told ESPN that he has been diagnosed with a recurrence of lung cancer, is now on leave from the university.

Schultz, 63, also testified that the allegations McQueary came to him with were "not that serious." Schultz retired from his position as a university vice president after the scandal became public.

According to the grand jury report, the grand jury "found that portions of the testimony provided by Curley and Schultz were not credible."
