House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) congratulated Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for being the first woman on a Republican presidential ticket, then quickly stated her opposition to virtually everything the vice presidential nominee stood for.
"I congratulate her on her historic candidacy, but completely oppose her policies," Pelosi said Tuesday afternoon when asked about Palin.
Pelosi stated she was looking forward to helping Barack Obama become the next president of the United States.
House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) was in a less generous mood, reminding reporters that it was actually the 1984 Democratic vice presidential nominee, Geraldine Ferraro, "who broke the glass ceiling" as the first woman to be on the national ticket of a major American political party.
