Patrick Dempsey reportedly joining next "Bridget Jones" film

Patrick Dempsey is signing on for the next "Bridget Jones" film, according to multiple reports.

The former "Grey's Anatomy" star is expected to join Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth for the third installment in the big-screen franchise, dubbed "Bridget Jones's Baby."

"Bridget Jones's Diary" director Sharon Maguire is on board to direct the film, which will center around Bridget, now in her 40s. Firth will return as love interest Mark Darcy. Other plot details remain vague, and it's unclear what role Dempsey will have. Perhaps another love interest?

According to Deadline, the upcoming movie will likely be based on columns written by "Bridget Jones" creator Helen Fielding. It's not expected to follow the plot of her latest novel, "Mad About the Boy."

The original "Bridget Jones's Diary" premiered in 2001 and also starred Hugh Grant. The sequel, "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason," came out in 2004.
