Parents Victor and Olaifa Ramos nearly starved 6-year-old son to death, Pa. prosecutors say

Victor and Olaifa Ramos are accused of nearly starving their 6-year-old son to death CBS Philly

(CBS) BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - Montgomery County authorities charged Victor and Olaifa Ramos with assault and child endangerment for starving their 6-year-old son, who officials say weighed just 29 pounds when he was admitted to a children's hospital three months ago, CBS Philly reports.

"This child was not given proper nutrition, proper calories to maintain a healthy body weight for his system, for his development," Montgomery County prosecutor Samantha Cauffman said.

Prosecutors said the 6-year-old was admitted to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia three months ago close to death. Cauffman said his skin was flaking off and he had no fat on his body, and doctors called it one of the worst cases of malnutrition they've ever seen.

The child stayed at the hospital for more than a month and improved, but returned twice suffering from malnourishment. He is now in protective custody.

The parents remain free on bail pending their next court appearance.
