Pack Lands Euro Star Weurffel

Quarterback Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy winner, signed Friday with the Green Bay Packers, days after leading the Rhein Fire to the NFL Europe championship.

Wuerffel completed 161 of 260 passes for 2,042 yards and 25 touchdowns, with seven interceptions, for the Fire, who beat the Scottish Claymores in Sunday's World Bowl at Frankfurt, Germany.

He's the fifth quarterback on Green Bay's roster heading into preseason training camp.

The 6-foot-1, 212-pound Wuerffel was drafted in the fourth round by the New Orleans Saints in 1997 out of Florida.

He played in 16 games, starting six, for the Saints from 1997-99, and became a free agent in February when they did not make him a qualifying offer. He completed 126 of 258 passes for 1,404 yards and nine touchdowns, with 16 interceptions, for New Orleans.

The Packers' other quarterbacks are starter Brett Favre, Matt Hasselbeck, Aaron Brooks and Ben Sankey, a rookie free agent from Wake Forest.
