Pa. teens get curfew in taped bullying
MEDIA, Pa. - A judge has ordered five juveniles who admitted taking part in the videotaped bullying of a 13-year-old Philadelphia-area boy to abide by a curfew and 45 days of home monitoring.
The teens also were ordered Thursday to perform community service after admitting their roles in return for having the most serious charges against them dropped. They received curfew restrictions ranging from 60 to 90 days and were released to their parents.
The 13-year-old victim was dragged through the snow, stuffed in a tree and hung by his jacket from a 7-foot-high fence post in the January 11 attack.
In the mobile phone video (watch below) the boy is screaming for his attackers to stop. Investigators say they snagged the recording before it made it to YouTube.
A sixth teen had been scheduled for trial but also entered into an agreement with prosecutors. He remains in custody pending a March 3 disposition hearing.
Last month, Upper Darby Township Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said the student did not suffer serious physical injuries.
"They're lucky they didn't kill him. They're lucky they didn't impale his neck into the progs of the fencing," Chitwood said.
"When these bums and thugs intimadate their fellow students and make the streets unsafe, it's unconscionable, we're not going to tolerate it, and they're going out in handcuffs," Chitwood said.
