Ore. couple pleads guilty to negligent homicide in son's death

Brandi Bellew and her husband Russel Bellew leave a Lane County courtroom on Tuesday AP

(CBS/AP) EUGENE, Ore. - A Creswell, Ore., husband and wife have pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in the faith-healing death of their 16-year-old son.

CBS affiliate KVAL-TV reports that the teen, Austin Sprout, died at home last December after his appendix burst. Lane County sheriff's Capt. Byron Trapp says medical professionals believe the boy's condition was treatable had he been provided medical care.

Sheriff's officers arrested Brandi and Russel Bellew in February. The woman is the boy's mother and Russel Bellew is his stepfather.

The couple is affiliated with the General Assembly and Church of the First Born, which believes in using prayer to treat illness.

Assistant District Attorney Eric Hasselman said that as part of the pleas entered Tuesday the Bellews are ordered to follow an in-home safety plan set up by the Department of Human Services to ensure their other children's safety. A probation officer will work with the family as well.
