One Huge Lottery Down, One To Go

One down, one to go.

A single player from Ohio won Tuesday night's $155 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot.

A $210 million Powerball jackpot is at stake in Wednesday night's drawing.

The winning numbers from Tuesday night's drawing were: 12,18,21,32 and 46. The Mega Ball number was 49.

"No one has come forward yet," Ohio Lottery spokeswoman Mardele Cohen told CBS affiliate WOIO-TV.

In addition, 27 players matched all five numbers but not the Mega Ball number. They will receive second prizes of $175,000 each.

Another 104 players matched four numbers, plus the Mega Ball number — good for third prizes of $5,000 each.

The South Euclid convenience store near Cleveland where the winning ticket was sold comes out a winner, too, said Cohen. "The selling bonus in $100,000, just for selling the ticket."

Between the two big jackpots — the first time both lotteries have been over $100 million at the same time — roughly two-thirds of America has lottery fever this week, reports CBS News Correspondent Mark Strassmann.

The Mega Millions winner beat phenomenal odds, 135 million to 1. If the winner takes the cash option, which most lottery players do, that will mean a check for $91 million, less 27.5 percent in taxes.

The Powerball lottery, which stretches across 24 states, D.C and the Virgin Islands, was selling tickets Wednesday at the rate of 17,000 per minute.

Not everyone who wins big rides off into the sunset happily.

Last Christmas Jack Whittaker won Powerball's $314 million dollar jackpot, the largest undivided prize ever.

"I can take this money and do a lot of good with it right now," he said, and did. He gave away millions to charity. But requests for money have overwhelmed him. He's even been robbed once. And his daughter has lost almost all her friends.

That cautionary tale isn't discouraging many people, certainly not those in Philadelphia who talked to CBS radio station KYW's Mark Drucker.

"I let the machine pick it."

"I bought $20 worth, so hopefully one day I'll be a millionaire."

"I'll be watching tonight — $210 million!"

"I never play it until it gets this big."

"Somebody has to win, and I'm gonna win."

"We are looking at probably double what we usually do on a regular $10 million, $20 million jackpot," said Cathy Walls of the Georgia Lottery.
