Oilers Get Salo In Mega Trade

The Edmonton Oilers made a pair of trades today, a seven-player deal with the Chicago Blackhawks and acquired starting goaltender Tommy Salo from the New York Islanders.

The Oilers sent defenseman Boris Mironov, forward Dean McAmmond and prospect Jonas Elofsson to the Blackhawks in exchange for center Chad Kilger, wings Daniel Cleary and Ethan Moreau and defenseman Christian Laflamme.

Edmonton got Salo from the Islanders for wing Mats Lindgren

Kilger had 14 goals and 11 assists in 64 games with the Blackhawks, Moreau had nine goals and six assists in 66 games, Leflamme two goals and 11 assists in 62 games and Cleary four goals and five assists in 35 games.

Mironov had 11 goals and 29 assists in 63 games for Edmonton, while McAmmond had nine goals and 25 assists.

Lindgren had five goals and 12 assists in 48 games with the Oilers. He was a first-round draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets in 1993.

In Salo, the Oilers finally obtained the No. 1 goaltender they've been looking for since losing Curtis Joseph to Toronto via free agency last summer. The Oilers are battling for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Salo was 17-26-7 with the Islanders this season with a 2.62 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage.
