The bald eagle is America's national symbol. But not so many years ago, this big bird was dying out.
That's because a manmade chemical called DDT was getting inside the birds. It made their eggshells so thin, they'd crack.
Because of DDT's dangers, our country stopped making it 25 years ago. The result? The number of bald eagles has soared.
"They have really come back," said an expert on the eagles.
That's good news for our national symbol—and for anyone else who sees a bald eagle on the wing.
