Obama Tags Along With Press on Tour of Mt. Rushmore

From CBS News' Allison O'Keefe:

RAPID CITY, S.D. – It isn't often the press corps decides where the candidate will go, but after hearing last night that the traveling press was making a late-night jaunt to nearby Mt. Rushmore, Barack Obama wanted in. "I want to go, too," Obama said after being told by an aide of the plans, and managed to get to the monument before the media.

It was a perfect clear western night. When the press corps arrived, Obama was just starting his tour. It was his first trip to the national memorial. "There's something about seeing it at night that's spectacular," he said.

"What do you guys think?" he said, turning to the traveling press. When asked if thought his face would be up there one day, he demurred. "I don't think my ears would fit," Obama said. "There's only so much rock up there."

As soon as the candidate walked in the darkness, the remaining light illuminating the past presidents went out.
