Novel Products Help You Take Your Medication
Medicine only works if you remember to take it. In fact, nearly half of all prescriptions written are taken incorrectly. Dr. Emily Senay visited the Early Show to talk about some products designed to remind us to take our medicine.
Here are the four products Senay described:
Epill Pill Bottle Alarm--This little device snaps onto the bottom of your pill bottle. It beeps as a reminder to take your medication. It is ideal for people taking an antibiotic.
Medglider--This is a portable alarm and pill case in one. It costs $20.It has four separate pill compartments and four different alarms. It is recommended for people who are taking drugs several times a day at specific times.
Medready Automated Pill Dispenser--This is a large round dispenser with a built-in clock and four different alarms. Inside it has 28 medication cups and a child-safety lock. This dispenser is great for older people who may forget whether they've taken their medication. The price is $120.
MD2--This big dispensing unit costs $800. It can be programmed to sound up to four alarms each day to alert you and then dispense your medicine. The MD2 connects to a phone line and it will call your doctor if the medicine isn't taken at the proper time. At the end of the day, the MD2 automatically calls the support center to report on how the medicine was taken that day. If there is a problem, the support staff will check the situation. This is ideal for elderly people who would rather stay in their homes than move into a nursing facility, but might forget to take their medicine. MD2 may also give the children of elderly parents some piece of mind. For more information on the MD2 visit www.imd2.com.
