No Stopping Pregnant Governor

Acting Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift continues working from her hospital bed.

Swift, who is pregnant with twins, held a teleconference Monday with her staff and also called Republican lawmakers.

On Sunday, she received a Mother's Day visit from her husband and 2-year-old daughter.

Swift was also visited in her hospital room by Cardinal Bernard Law, and the two spoke about the importance of motherhood, said Swift spokesman Jason Kauppi.

The cardinal said a prayer with Swift, who is Catholic, during his visit on Saturday night.

In a sermon on Sunday, Law had supportive words for Swift's efforts to run the state from her hospital room, despite criticism from some members of the Governor's Council.

"Some public comment concerning her ability to govern as she awaits birth has been both foolish and uncivil," Law said. "After all, the telephone, the fax and the computer are all normal means of communication today, and they can be utilized as easily from as hospital room as from an office."

Swift was admitted to the Brigham and Women's Hospital last Tuesday. Her doctor said at the time she would likely give birth within 10 days.

"She's getting a little tired of being cooped up in a hospital room," said Kauppi. "But she realizes she has to stay off her feet."
