No School for Many

School closing causes headaches for parents, school districts

No school Thursday meant more school days in June or shorter winter and spring breaks.

But most children didn't mind.

They got to sleep in while their parents scrambled to find someone to watch them.

Public schools were closed throughout New Jersey, Washington and New York City.

Public and parochial schools in Philadelphia closed just after noon, and in Maryland, schools were closed in Baltimore and 16 of the state's 20 counties.

The last time New Jersey and New York schools were shuttered was during a blizzard in 1996.

Some New Jersey parents said they were happy schools were closed for the entire day instead of an early closing that would have forced them to leave work to pick up their children.
