No Monkeying Around For Alabama Republican
Businesswoman Cheryl Baswell Guthrie, a Republican vying to succeed Rep. Bud Cramer (D-Ala.), wants to let voters know she’s not “monkeying” around when it comes to ethics reform.
She’s been airing a series of advertisements lately featuring dancing chimpanzees that have got to qualify for the “so bad it’s good” category of political ads.
One features Guthrie in a job interview with three crooked businessmen (one who looks like and laughs like Santa Claus) talking about her plan for ethics reform, which is promptly rejected by the trio. Why Baswell Guthrie would want to portray herself actively seeking the endorsement of this group is anyone’s guess.
After she’s done speaking, the door opens to reveal another Congressional candidate: a monkey in a suit. This makes the Santa character, wearing rainbow suspenders, quite jolly indeed.
Careful viewers will note that the monkey is accompanied by two human handlers peering through the door, one of whom appears to be a midget wearing a magenta-sequined tuxedo jacket and a red fedora. They also may notice a Maryland flag in the background — a strange item to be included in an Alabama political ad.
