Second man in Rehtaeh Parsons child porn case also gets no jail
NOVA SCOTIA - The second man convicted in the Rehtaeh Parsons child pornography case has been sentenced to one year of probation, reports the CBC.
Parsons, 17, committed suicide in 2013 after digital photos of her alleged gang rape in April 2011 were circulated among her peers in Nova Scotia, Canada.
The man, who has not been identified because he was 17 at the time of the crime, reportedly admitted to posing with Parsons on the night of the party. The CBC reports that the photograph depicts Parsons naked from the waist down with the men pressed against her, giving the camera a thumbs-up.
Another man, who was also 17 at the time, pleaded guilty to taking the photo and also received no jail time.
According to the CBC, the second man told the court at his Thursday sentencing that he "made a huge mistake."
Judge Gregory Lenehan reportedly ordered him to undergo a mental health assessment. The CBC reports that the judge said "the photo was a 'gross violation of the personal integrity of Ms. Parsons' and that the man had shown 'utter contempt for Ms. Parsons,' saying she was 'no more than a prop for his enjoyment.'"
