N.J. woman claims prostitutes assaulted her at Miami Beach hotel
(CBS) MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - Anna Burgese, a New Jersey woman, filed a lawsuit against the owners of the W Hotel on Miami Beach Monday, claiming she and her husband were jumped and assaulted by a group of prostitutes outside the hotel earlier this year, CBS Miami reports.
According to the complaint filed by the couple, police told them the prostitutes may have been under the influence and confused Anna as "competition, i.e., another prostitute who was capturing business at the hotel," the station reports.
The lawsuit alleges Burgese was walking through the hotel lobby when she "was the subject of a completely unprovoked, sudden and brutal attack." The lawsuit states Burgese was "grabbed from behind and thrown with great force into a stone wall, head-first."
The group also attacked Burgese's husband, Joseph, according to the complaint.
The Burgeses' lawsuit claims that the W hotel is "frequented by prostitutes" and that the hotel "fosters a prostitute-friendly environment where prostitutes are permitted to market themselves on the premises...," CBS Miami reports. It also alleges that the hotel's employees helped the alleged prostitutes flee the scene.
Starwood Hotels, the company that owns W Hotels, released the following statement on the matter: "We truly regret that this incident occurred and that one of our guests was injured. Because of the pending litigation, we are unable to comment further at this time."
It is unclear if any of the alleged prostitutes involved in the incident were later arrested.
