Nintendo Switch: First look at new gaming system revealed
Nintendo has announced a new gaming system called the Nintendo Switch that combines a portable handheld tablet-style device with a dock to use at home.
The gaming giant released a preview video of the console Thursday. It says the Switch will be released in March.
The Switch features a dock to connect the system to a TV for big-screen play, but users can also lift the device from the dock and use it in portable mode. It comes with detachable controllers and features single and multiplayer capabilities.
“The Nintendo Switch is kind of a hybrid,” CNET senior editor Scott Stein told CBS News. “The Switch is a tablet that also connects to your TV and plays games, so it’s kind of the best of both worlds.”
Stein said he expects the new system will have appeal for families and kids. “Hardcore gamers have never really responded to Nintendo in quite the same way,” he noted.
Nintendo said an exact launch date, price and more specifics will be released later.
