NHL Suspends Jones, Smehlik


Colorado Avalanche right wing Keith Jones has been suspended for two games without pay and fined $1,000 by the NHL because of a check he made to the head of Buffalo's Curtis Brown.

Jones received a minor penalty for the hit, which occurred in the second period of Monday night's game. He sat out Wednesday night's game against Boston and was to miss Thursday night's game at Phoenix.

The NHL also suspended defenseman Richard Smehlik of Buffalo for one game and fined him $1,000 for high sticking Colorado's Valeri Kamensky in Monday night's game.

Smehlik will miss Friday night's game against Florida.
