· Gregg grew up in a political family. His father, Hugh Gregg, was elected NH Governor in 1952 and played a key role in presidential politics up until 1988.
· Judd Gregg ran for the U.S. Senate in 1992, when incumbent Warren Rudman announced his retirement. He defeated his challenger, John Rauh, in a three-way race carrying 48% of the vote to Rauh's 46%. He is New Hampshire's Junior Senator.
· In the Senate, Gregg appears moderate as newer, more conservative Senators are elected. During his tenure he drafted Medicare reform to give senior citizens more choices and passed an amendment prohibiting states from regulating over-the-counter drugs without FDA approval.
· Gregg was elected chief deputy whip when Trent Lott took over as Majority Leader in 1996.
· He has a special interest in disability issues and has been vocal on the issue of special education. As part of the campaign against 'unfunded mandates', Gregg wants to transfer special ed. funding responsibilities from the states to the federal government - increasing Washington's responsibility to 40% instead of just 7%.
· Gregg has campaigned on his commitment to fiscal conservatism. In the Senate, Gregg has the fourth highest ranking among Republicans from the the bipartisan Concord Coalition. He voted for NAFTA and the balanced budget agreement.
· As Goveror, Gregg earned a reputation for frugality and was ranked ninth in the Wall Street Journal's Good Governor Guide. The report focuses mainly on taxes and spending. During his two terms as governor, Gregg was successful in starting a statewide recycling program.
· With his bad knees and other inhibiting factors, Gregg received a draft deferment in 1969 avoided military service. Rauh made this an issue in their 1992 Senate campaign.
