(CBS/AP) NEW YORK - New York City police say a woman accuses star NFL receiver Brandon Marshall of punching her in the face at a nightclub, only days before he was traded this week to the Chicago Bears.

Marshall was traded Tuesday from the Miami Dolphins to the Bears. Both teams said Wednesday they were aware of the alleged incident before the trade.

The woman alleges the incident occurred at 3:50 a.m. Sunday outside the Marquee in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. Police are investigating a complaint she filed Monday evening. Marshall has not been charged.

According to CBS New York, Marshall's lawyer Harvey Steinberg issued the following statement about the incident.

"Brandon Marshall was the key note speaker at a charitable event in New York. After the event was over he, his wife and close friends attended a function at a local club. While at the function a fight broke out NOT involving Mr. Marshall or his friends."

Last year, Marshall's wife was arrested after he was stabbed in the abdomen during a domestic dispute. Charges were later dropped.

Marshall was involved in a 2007 fight in Denver that led to the drive-by slaying of the Broncos' Darrent Williams.
