(CBS News) LONDON - Police believe Reeva Steenkamp, the girlfriend of Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius, was in her nightgown in the bedroom when she was first shot, according to South African media reports.

She slept in the same bed as Pistorius, police said. She then ran to the bathroom and locked herself inside, where she was shot in the head, hand and arm. Pistorius reportedly broke through the bathroom door and carried his dying girlfriend down the stairs.

Oscar Pistorius, famous for overcoming odds as a double-amputee to compete in the Olympics, was charged Thursday with murdering his girlfriend. He is due back in a South African court Tuesday for a bail application hearing.

The athlete's lawyers met with him for a second day at the Pretoria police station where he's being held, while details of what happened at the track star's home last Thursday began to emerge.

When his sister Aimee arrived to their home Thursday, Pistorius was trying to revive Steenkamp. He reportedly told his sister he thought his girlfriend was a burglar. She's given a sworn statement to police.

His father Henke Pistorius told a reporter for Britain's Telegraph newspaper that his son had acted out of instinct.

"He said there is absolutely no doubt in his mind that his son believed he was attacking an intruder," reporter Aislinn Laing said.

Police dismissed the intruder theory from the start and arrested Pistorius on murder charges. They took a 9-mm gun from the home, and they reportedly found a bloody bat inside. Whether it was used as a weapon is still unclear.

Billboards of South Africa's golden boy are coming down. All of his races have been canceled, his agent said, so he can focus on his defense.

At a church in Pretoria, they prayed for Reeva Steenkamp's family, who will bury her on Tuesday, and for Oscar Pistorius, who is on suicide watch until his next court hearing that same day.
