Neighbor charged with murder of N.C. guidance counselor

NEWTON, N.C. -- Police say they have made an arrest in connection with the murder of North Carolina guidance counselor Maggie Daniels.

Sharman Howard Odom was taken into custody in Winston-Salem Saturday, reports CBS affiliate WBTV, one day after investigators with the Newton Police Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation obtained an arrest warrant charging him with murder.

Daniels, 31, was found slain June 28 in her Newton apartment, about 45 miles north of Charlotte. Odom lived in the same apartment complex as Daniels, police said in an emailed statement, and his apartment was previously searched by investigators.

Police haven't said how she was killed.

Physical evidence analyzed by the North Carolina State Crime Lab led to the issuance of the warrant, along with interviews and other corroborating evidence, according to the statement. Sources tell WBTV that DNA results are among the evidence against Odom, who appeared to be smiling as he was taken into custody.

More than a hundred people were interviewed and dozens of items were sent to the state crime lab as part of the investigation, reports WBTV.

Daniels was a popular counselor and coach and was the 2011 Newton-Conover City Schools' teacher of the year.

Odom was due in court Monday.
