Neb. Official's Son Accidentally Shoots Self

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy says his adult son was injured when he accidentally shot himself in the face.

Sheehy says he's grateful the injuries his 21-year-old son, Joel, sustained do not appear to be life threatening.

Sheehy says Joel Sheehy was handling a handgun he owns in his west Omaha apartment when the gun fired early Wednesday. The bullet struck Joel Sheehy's right cheek and exited behind his right ear.

Omaha police said investigators believe the shooting was an accident.

Joel Sheehy underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon to repair facial fractures. His next surgery is scheduled for Friday afternoon. The lieutenant governor says his son is in stable condition.

Rick Sheehy canceled all public events through Sunday.
